Mary Baker Eddy founded Christian Science in 1866 after she was healed of a serious injury.
This healing occurred as she was reading an account of one of Jesus' healings in the New Testament.
This led her to discover what she came to know as the Science of Christianity, which she later named
Christian Science.
|
Christian Science is defined as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating
the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." (Rudimental Divine Science, Mary Baker Eddy p.1)
The Christian Science Church is "designed to commemorate the word and works of our master (Christ Jesus)
which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." (Manual of the Mother Church,
Mary Baker Eddy p.17)
|
In order to move away from a personal form of preaching, Mary Baker Eddy ordained two books to be
the pastor of the church: the Bible and the Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These books
are the only "preachers"; there is no ordained clergy.

For a full and complete statement of Christian Science we recommend that you read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
